  • How do you find them?

    These estimates are only available for

    • Mammogram in Past 2 Years, Age 40+
    • Pap Smear in Past 3 Years, No Hysterectomy, Ages 18+
    • Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) in Past 2 Years, Ages 50+
    • Ever Had Colorectal Endoscopy (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy), Ages 50+
    • Ever Had Colorectal Cancer Test (home-based FOBT in the past two years or ever had a colorectal endoscopy), Ages 50+
    • Smokers (current or ever), Age 18+

    Select one of those statistics in the Screening and Risk Factors drop-down, and then you can choose County-Level Modeled Estimates in the Data Type drop-down when you choose Counties for a specific state (e.g., Alabama Counties) in the Area drop-down.

  • Why are they different?

    One difference is that the direct estimate is from data collected in one year, while the modeled estimate relies on pooled data from 2008 through 2010.

    Another difference is that the modeled estimates use data from BRFSS as well as another survey (NHIS) that has a smaller but more representative sample, in that NHIS includes people without phones or with only cell phones. The national cancer screening prevalence estimates based on the BRFSS was sometimes substantially larger than the NHIS estimates for the same time period1. For similar time periods, the modeled estimates may be closer to the true value.

    The model uses multiple years (2008-2010) to provide reasonable sample sizes (mainly for estimates at the county level), and needs at least two years of data from each survey. For the screening questions, data actually came from year 2008 and 2010. For smoking, data came from each year of 2008 to 2010.
